Official Pirate 101 Trailer

Game Concept

Pirate 101 is a game for aspiring pirates and experienced swashbucklers alike. Starting out as a rookie pirate it is your task to not only sail the seven sea…eh, skies but also to find a crew of reliable and potent mates while trying to make a living as a moderately honest pirate! In the beginning this might be easier said than done but once you exchanged your rusty sabre with a proper one and a handful of crewmen behind your back you will eventually get the hang of it. Don’t let the adventures rise to your head though, since who knows what the world of Pirate 101 might throw at you.

Five playable classes:

Hold your horses, or better: parrots, my friend. Before you embark on your adventure in the skies of Pirate 101, you need to make an important decision. Which class will you play? As for now there are five different classes to choose from, where each of them comes with a unique play stile and a specific set of skills. Right now you can either play as: Buccaneer, Musketeer, Privateer, Swashbuckler or Witchdoctor. While you might have played your MMOs with Warriors and Mages and such, these classes might seem bewildering at first but rest assured that you will pick up their individual strengths and weaknesses pretty fast. For our test we fiddled around with the Witchdoctor and the Musketeer mostly. Whereas the witch doctor is a master of magics, overpowering her foes with a barrage of arcane might, the Musketeer prefers a barrage of lead to teach his enemies a lesson. Honestly, both things turned out to be pretty lethal for our foes. In the end it is your decision though which class suits your desired playstyle the most but after several hours spent in this game we can assure you that you will find something you enjoy.

Turn-based combat:

Once you encounter your first foes you will notice that the game changes. Combat in Pirate 101 is a matter of finesse, strategy and developing genuine battle plans. The overview turns onto a grid based platform where you position your avatar and your crew as plates on the grid. Using their abilities and moving them each turn will give you the impression of playing a game of chess at times, since mastering the combat mechanics of Pirate 101 is a thing in itself. Sure, it’s relatively easy to pick it up but before you explored every nook and cranny of the combat system, several dozens of hours will have passed. A good thing though, since aside from the combat system there isn’t much that is as demanding in Pirate 101.

Ideally for kids and beginners:

While the combat system might be somewhat overwhelming in the beginning, the rest of Pirate 101 presents itself in a very neat and beginner friendly fashion. There are several features, like pets, housing and tons of mini games that can be played whenever you feel like it or just want to take a break from your adventures. In this regard Pirate 101 provides a light-hearted gaming experience that targets especially younger gamers as an audience and that’s actually a good thing. Violence and overly sexual character representations are nothing you will find in this game. Actually it is quite the opposite, a crude humor and a neat little dance with tropes and puns around the pirate genre is what you should expect when starting this game. A welcome change.

The Bottom Line

The free-to-play Pirate MMO Game Pirate 101 is a great game for beginners and kids, so much can be taken as a fact. The overall presentation, the light-hearted humor and the crude character will get you giggling eventually with their absurd lines and visuals. Furthermore it’s the whole world of Pirate 101 that is rather bright and inviting without leaning too heavily on common themes such as violence or overly sexual character designs. On the other hand though, despite being cleverly made, the combat system might be a little bit too complex for the target audience, as it takes quite some time to get a full grasp on all the details and mechanics of the grid- and turn-based combat. Nonetheless, this game is definitely worth a visit and if not for you, then potentially for your kids.
